America at 250

Illinois State Capitol in Springfield on a sunny afternoon 2022 i Stock 1361965298

This national anniversary provides a unique opportunity to reflect on the complex legacy of our country’s founding, uplift undertold stories, and showcase diverse perspectives.

Throughout Illinois, humanities organizations - libraries and archives, history centers, heritage sites, schools, and universities – are actively planning with their communities.

Illinois Humanities is supporting our statewide humanities community as a convener, connector, and clearinghouse, while also developing a series of free public programs.

“...Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.”

On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was signed. Although Illinois had not yet become a state, Illinoisans have long played, and continue to play, a vital role in bringing the Declaration’s ideals to life.

July 4, 2026, will mark 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. To help make this Declaration more available, the staff of Illinois Humanities read and recorded the original text.

This 10-minute audio experience is accompanied by thought-provoking guided reflection questions. We invite Illinoisans to discover—or rediscover—the words of this founding historic document.

Illinois Humanities invites you think - and talk about - some of the "big ideas" that continue to shape how we think about our country and what we value.

  • Natural Rights - What do you think are the most important rights everyone should have, no matter where they live or who they are?
  • Equality - Has America fully lived up to the ideal that all people have equal and natural rights? What would this ideal look like where you live? Do you think the American Revolution has ever been completed?
  • Government by Consent - Do you think it is important for people to have a say in how they are governed? Why?
  • Grievances Against Tyranny and the Right to Revolution - What are ways government can be changed? When, if ever, is it okay for people to try to overthrow their government?
  • Getting the Word Out -  If Americans felt the need to submit a new Declaration of Independence in 2026, what do you think would be the best way to notify the public and get their focused attention?
