LHS junior receives “Certificate of Creativity”

LAWRENCEVILLE — Adeline Newlin, a junior at Lawrenceville High School, recently received her "Certificate of Creativity" from the Gwendolyn Brooks Youth Poetry Awards sponsored by the Illinois Humanities Project, announced in a press release.

Newlin submitted her poem, "Dyo Ephemerals," last spring. More than 1,000 entries were submitted by aspiring poets across Illinois.

Newlin is the second student from Lawrence County to participate in the contest.

Opening my eyes I see him.

I blink, I see her.

Close, for both of them are nothing but phantoms.

I walk the halls looking for him.

Knowing when I find him he will be with another.

Looking up, trying to meet his eyes.

He ignores.

Some time, long ago, he would smile at the sight.

I stand, listening for her laugh where she was lowered.

The pure memory of her gone.

Seeing our picture I cry.

I hear her in a memory, then it is gone.

Sometime, long ago, her laughter rang in my ear and her hands warm in mine.

Again I look at him.

His promise to acknowledge, broken.

One second, my heart is all sorrow and regret.

Next second, his heart is hate and yearning.

Again I hear her laugh.

The memory back.

One second, my heart snug and loved.

Next second, I can feel her heart beat.

For one second, those dyo ephemerals are real.
