NORMAL, Ill. (WMBD) — For decades, Mike Matejka has helped shape what Bloomington-Normal is today, making him this week’s CI Hero.

From his work at the McLean County Museum of History or Not In Our Town, he is known by the community.

Matejka has been recognized as an advocate for the people of McLean County, helping make it a better place. The Illinois Humanities also recognized him with the 2026 Public Humanities Award for his leadership in creating change in the community.

“They’re recognizing people who get out, get involved in the community, but also because of all the history things that I’m involved in. I think that was a big part of it, telling the story of average people, working people,” said Matejka.
