An Oswego teenager is one of 38 poets who will be honored at the 8th annual Gwendolyn Brooks Youth Poetry Awards ceremony this week. Tenth grader Emily Chorvat was named as an honorable mention in her grade group for her poem, "X".
The annual poetry contest is organized by Illinois Humanities in partnership with Brooks Permissions, the Poetry Foundation, and the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts and is named for Gwendolyn Brooks, who began the Youth Poetry Awards in 1969 during her tenure as Illinois Poet Laureate and continued to run the awards until her passing in 2000.
