Building a Home: A Writing Workshop

If we believe the theory that, 30,000 years ago, America was a continent without the presence of humans, it could be said that we are all immigrants in a new land. We read of people who crossed the Bering Strait to North America 16,500 years ago, and of travelers who originated in the Polynesian islands 800 years ago. As human beings, the phenomenon of migration is part of us, as is learning how to build new homes for ourselves. This workshop for both new and experienced writers will encourage participants to reflect upon and write about the home we have been building in the United States – in what may be the last phase of our migration. Participants are encouraged to bring their own writing implements, although paper and pens will be made available on-site.  

Si creemos en la teoría de que, hace 30.000 años, América era un continente sin presencia humana, se podría decir que todos somos inmigrantes en una nueva tierra. Leemos sobre aquellas personas que cruzaron el estrecho de Bering hacia América del Norte hace 16.500 años, y sobre viajeros que se originaron en las islas polinesias hace 800 años. Como seres humanos, el fenómeno de la migración es parte de nosotros, al igual que aprender a construir nuevos hogares para nosotros mismos. Este taller animará a los participantes a reflexionar y escribir sobre el hogar que hemos estado construyendo en los Estados Unidos, en lo que podría ser la última fase de nuestra migración. Se anima a los participantes a traer sus propios implementos de escritura, aunque se pondrá a disposición papel y bolígrafos en el lugar.
